Möykkä ry - The Catalyst for Live Electronic Music

By focusing on live music instead of the traditional DJ-driven approach, Möykkä ry brings an alternative to the electronic music scene. They promote and enliven the local scene by organizing distinctive events where drum machines, synthesizers, and euroracks are the heart of the experience.

It started with a fog-filled cabin in September 2023. At their first gathering, called Möykkämökki, they played drum and bass as loud as they could. Blending heavy kicks with bouncy melodies, this fast-paced UK hardcore style set the tone. After organizing two events, the move to an official association in 2024 allowed them to formalize their operations and steer event profits directly into developing their activities. The name Möykkä (roughly translating to Ruckus or Noise) was a perfect fit.

Driven by distinctive humor and aesthetic, Möykkä ry welcomes all musical styles, from buzzing and hissing to full-on dancefloor-filling pounding. It’s important that artists have the freedom to express themselves, whether it's delicate vibing or full-on intensity.

As active attendees themselves, Möykkä ry's founding members are familiar faces at Oulu's subculture events. Their work stems from a genuine desire to be part of the community and to collaborate with other actors. The goal is to ensure respectful conduct is the norm, not the exception, achieved by partnering with venues that already prioritize safer spaces.

Looking ahead, the vision is a community where creators connect easily. They dream of a dedicated scene living room, a venue with a permanent, high-quality setup to end the cycle of building everything from scratch. With a goal of five events per year, their doors are open to anyone wanting to develop the Oulu electronic music scene together.
